Maple St. complex may face closure

Jackson Clarion Ledger, MS

Cleopatra Jones is thankful she has a place to live, despite the squalid conditions of her Jackson apartment complex in the city's Georgetown area.

She said the manager at Jackson Apartments, 1129 Maple St., has done the best she can to make the complex near downtown tolerable.

Jones and some of her neighbors agree things could be better. But they fear if Mayor Frank Melton has his way, the complex will be closed and they'll be on the streets.

On Saturday, Melton issued an executive order announcing his intent to "evaluate, close down and tear down" the complex. He said he issued the order based on serious health and safety issues there.

"I'm making a standard that will apply to all the apartment complexes," Melton said. "I've been after that apartment complex ever since I was with the (Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics)."
