58 arrested in drug raid; 22 still sought

The State
COLUMBIA, S.C.
08/11/05

More than 100 law enforcement officers from state and federal agencies arrested 58 people Tuesday and Wednesday in and around Columbia as part of a drug raid.

The arrests stem from a four-person indictment charging Robert Freeman “Poncho” Garrick, 33, with conspiracy to distribute five or more kilograms of cocaine and 50 grams or more of crack cocaine.

Garrick, his brother, Desmond Garrick, 33, both of Columbia and Omar Renteria, 27, of Atlanta are in custody. Manuel Angel Saucedo Perez, 27, of Atlanta still is a fugitive. Evidence presented in court indicates Perez is Garrick’s supplier.

Officers seized close to $1 million worth of drugs, guns and ammunition Tuesday and Wednesday as officers searched the King and House street areas of Columbia.

These indictments build upon “Operation Clean Greene” in June, where the Columbia Police Department arrested 29 people, targeting the organized drug dealing in the Greene Street area of Columbia.

Police are still looking for 22 suspects.
