Bessemer assistant district attorney arrested in sting

TUSCALOOSA (AP) — An assistant district attorney from Bessemer accused of taking money to get two drug cases thrown out of court is on administrative leave without pay.

Brion Russell was arrested Tuesday in Tuscaloosa by investigators from the Alabama attorney general's office after he was seen taking money from a defendant, The Birmingham News reported.

Russell, who handles drug cases, was charged with breaking the ethics law by soliciting or receiving something of value to influence his official actions.

Attorney General Troy King would not say what sparked the investigation or how much money was involved.
