Student Newspaper Demands Answers
The University of Maryland's Independent Student Newspaper
Four days ago, thousands of university students stuffed themselves into the corridors and streets of this city’s downtown and celebrated the Terrapin men’s basketball team’s victory — and season sweep — over Duke University. Police officers fired pepper balls at students, struck several of them with nightsticks and then proceeded to arrest 14 of them. Other than the charges filed against them, the public still has no idea why these men and women were arrested. Nor do we know if county police have a documentable policy on riot containment and the use of their potentially dangerous pepper ball guns.
