An ongoing citywide drug sting in Jacksonville that began Friday night netted 20 arrests and a significant amount of drugs, Jacksonville Police Chief Mike Yaneiro said Saturday.

The drug raid, dubbed “Operation Avalanche,” is the culmination of a six-month investigation to remove the higher echelon drug dealers from the city’s streets, Yaniero said. Police made arrests throughout the night at multiple locations across the city.

“We’re targeting the mid- to upper-level drug dealers,” Yaniero said. “We work on the street-level problem on a day-to-day basis. The goal of (the raids) is to interrupt the supply of drugs to the street level.”

Yaniero said the raids have resulted in about 180 felony drug charges ranging from possession to drug trafficking in cocaine, marijuana and opiates. Yaniero said there has been some residual arrests along with the primary culprits.

180 felonies/20 arrests = 9 felony charges per arrestee
