Two Gainesville men were arrested over the weekend on drug charges, and one also was charged with animal cruelty after he reportedly assaulted a police dog.

According to a report from Lt. Scott Ware of the Hall County Multi Agency Narcotics Squad, officers had a search warrant for the Marlow Drive home of Jeremy Jermaine Johnson.

They found suspected marijuana with an estimated street value of about $2,000, the report said. Johnson, 27, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Agents also tried to arrest another man, Jerald Henry Bryant Jr., 20, but the report said he ran from Johnson's home and was found hiding under a neighbor's house.

Bryant reportedly fought with the officers and also choked a police dog before he was taken into custody, according to the report. A search of his vehicle found more suspected marijuana, a handgun, scales and money .

Ware said Bryant was taken to the hospital for treatment of dog bites before being booked into the Hall County Detention Center.

"Both he and the dog are OK now," Ware said Monday.

In addition to drug possession, Bryant is charged with having a concealed weapon, two counts of obstruction of an officer, cruelty to animals and injuring a police dog.
