Guards approached the cell and discovered Gerber had barricaded himself and his cellmate in by flipping a mattress over and tying a sheet at ground level across the cell – a tactic inmates use to trip guards, Hyder said. Gerber, who was dressed in underwear, also had smeared his body with coca butter – a skin lotion similar to petroleum jelly - to make himself slippery so guards could not grab him.
