US anti-drug agent killed during drug raid in Lima
A member of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was killed Wednesday during a police raid in Lima that netted one ton of cocaine, an Interior Minsitry official told AFP.
Two Peruvian police officers were seriously injured and seven people were arrested in the police operation, said the official who asked not to be identified.
The DEA agent, whose identity was not disclosed, was killed in an explosion when, together with other DEA colleagues and Peruvian police, he was trying to open a container holding one tone of liquid cocaine.
The Interior Ministry official said a blowtorch used to open the container apparently set off the chemicals inside.
The DEA agent died in the hospital from the massive injuries sustained in the blast, he added.
The police raid and explosion took place at a warehouse in an western Lima industrial complex.
