Deputy Accused Of Having Sex With Inmate

PORTALES, N.M. -- A Roosevelt County sheriff's deputy is accused of taking an inmate out of the county jail to have sex with her.
Gary Adkins was arrested Monday on a second-degree charge of criminal sexual penetration. He was released on a $20,000 bond.
Court documents say the woman who was being held on a probation violation was taken out of her cell at 6 p.m. on July 1 by Adkins.
She alleges that Adkins took her to a room within the Portales Law Enforcement Complex, kissed her and tried to remove her pants.
Adkins checked the woman back into the jail at 7 p.m. and then signed her out again about an hour later.
Court records allege he then took the woman to a dirt road and had sex with her in his patrol car.
Adkins has been placed on administrative leave. State police are investigating.
