US-Netherlands Anti-Drug Accord

In today's Washington Post, Sam Coates reports that the U.S. and the Netherlands have reached an accord on dealing with "high potency marijuana." U.S. Drug Czar John Walters and Dutch Health Minister Hans Hoogervorst have announced plans to hold a summit on the topic, despite the lack of any scientific evidence that "high potency marijuana" presents any real public health threat. Its discouraging to see the Dutch government lend credence to one of the drug war's oldest and most ridiculous myths.

Coates' claims that:

"The administration drug chief and his new best friend had bonded over a new high-potency form of marijuana, known as THC, because of its psychoactive ingredient delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol."

Apparently neither Coates nor the fact-checking team at the Post delved into the issue deeply enough to realize that THC is the active ingredient in ALL marijuana, not some new chemical produced only by hyper-potent plants.

  • I feel that the Dutch recognize the non-debilitating truth about super potent pot, but they are dealing with a 900 pound gorilla when the U.S. pressures them on the issue. The Dutch have their own way of dealing with this. Anti-drug laws are on the books in the Netherlands as a result of past pressure from the U.S. , but the Dutch "enforce" these laws their own way. I suspect that during the summit the Dutch will be superficially agreeable to the U.S. demands and when the 900 pound gorilla goes home or leaves to harrass someone else, they will continue to do things the "Dutch Way" regardless of any new laws pressured onto their books.

It would be so nice if our local law enforcement just quit enforcing these silly drug laws here in the U.S. Since so many law enforcement agencies are stretched to the max, just dropping enforcement of laws against "victimless crimes" would save a lot of money and manpower.

In many States there are silly laws on the books against totally private things such as masturbation. No one ever had the political courage to remove these laws, instead they simply go unenforced.

If our leaders do not have the courage to change our drug laws, at least our local leaders ought to look into simply ignoring them.

How do you deal with a 900 pound gorilla? When he shows up just smile and say "uh-huh". When he leaves, do things your way.
