AUGUSTA -- An 18-year-old from Augusta will serve five days in jail for creating an explosive device that injured an Augusta police officer last November.
William A. McDaniel, 18, of Augusta pleaded guilty to reckless conduct Monday in Kennebec County Superior Court.
McDaniel was sentenced to three years in jail, with all but five days suspended, and two years of probation.
Assistant District Attorney Paul Rucha said McDaniel and John Rhynd, 18, were stopped by an Augusta police Detective Chris Massey about 1 a.m. Nov. 23, 2005. The officer took their plastic soda bottle, suspecting it contained drugs.
The bottle, filled with bleach and ammonia, exploded inside the cruiser, temporarily blinding and deafening Massey.
