Force detailed at juvenile center
TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER
Two months before the alleged beating of a 17-year-old by an officer at the Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center, officials were warned that some officers may be hitting youths there.
Last August, a Department of Juvenile Justice audit reported staff and youths at Beaumont said that some officers used excessive force by punching youths "once or twice" after the youths had been restrained.
On Nov. 1, as Tyrone Johnson struggled with officers who were holding him, another officer punched him repeatedly in the face and head, Officer David Shurland told The Times-Dispatch last month. Shurland, a witness, said one officer was fired and three demoted as a result.
