Ex-deputy off to prison in sex case
LAPEER, MI - A former Lapeer County sheriff's deputy convicted in the sexual assaults of two underage girls received a stern lecture from a judge and a tearful one from a victim before he was sentenced to prison.
Chained and dressed in orange jail overalls, Kevin Chittick, 38, of Grand Blanc Township said nothing Monday about the crimes before his sentencing. He stayed silent on the advice of his attorney, Michael P. Manley, because of pending appeals of his conviction.
Lapeer Circuit Judge Nick O. Holowka told Chittick that, in addition to the two girls, his actions victimized his fellow Lapeer County law enforcement officers by reducing the public's trust in the profession.
Holowka then read through 19 felony sexual assault charges and one misdemeanor neglect of duty charge before sentencing Chittick to 7 years 11 months to 15 years in prison.
During the trial, the girl testified that Chittick, who worked his way into her life and her family while serving as a deputy, had sex with her at his home in Grand Blanc Township, in a tent at a horse camp up north and in other places, including a hayloft at a friend's farm.
