Young men at detention center allege abuse in lawsuit

(10/16/05 - McALLEN, TX) - The relatives of three young men who were incarcerated at a juvenile detention center in South Texas have filed a $4.5 million federal lawsuit, claiming guards caused severe injuries by using excessive force when disciplining the detainees.
One of the detainees, Calvin Barefield, claims he was left blind in his right eye after guards "grinded his face across the concrete sidewalk," scraping off the entire right side of his face.
Barefield said he was beaten by guards last November after falling asleep during a group session. Officers are accused of using a racial expletive when they allegedly injured Barefield, who is still detained at the Evins Regional Juvenile Center in Edinburg.
