Ex-officer's trial in kicking of suspect begins

A federal trial began yesterday for a former Petersburg police officer charged with kicking a man who minutes earlier had been beaten bloody and motionless.
The head stomps left Koonce, then 27, in a coma for two months with bruising and hemorrhaging to the right side of the brain and multiple fractures to the skull and face. He continues to deal with the effects of his injuries.
Koonce allegedly had bags of marijuana in his pants pockets and ran from the police.
