AZTEC, N.M. -- A former San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center guard accused of arranging fights among prisoners has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison.

David Nicholson, 29, was sentenced yesterday in Aztec by state District Judge John Dean.

Nicholson pleaded guilty to charges including solicitation of first-degree murder, bribery of a witness and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

He admitted to encouraging young prisoners to retaliate against rival gang members and instructing them on how to strike back.

Court documents say Nicholson became the leader of a gang and set up ambushes against rival gang members who were beaten in their cells or in showers.
