Combative inmate burned in jail scuffle
Mail Tribune
A murder defendant who twice fought with deputies over the weekend got more than he bargained for in the second incident, when the combination of an electric charge and pepper spray ignited flames around his head.
In the tussle, a small amount of hair on Hansen’s ear lobe burned, apparently when the Tasers ignited residual alcohol expelled from a can of pepper spray, Winters said. The flame was extinguished when a deputy smothered the flames by putting his hand over Hansen’s ear, Winters added.
Two jail inmates, both of whom requested anonymity out of fear of reprisals, said in separate phone calls to the Mail Tribune that flames were clearly visible about Hansen’s neck and head.
