Jail guard fired in rape probe

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A St. Joseph County Jail guard was fired after the sheriff said he failed a polygraph test after a female inmate accused him of rape.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Frank Canarecci said Tuesday he had turned the results of the internal investigation over to the county prosecutor's office, which will decide whether to pursue charges against guard Johnny Howard.

The mother of the inmate claimed her daughter was raped by Howard more than once, beginning Jan. 2 and continuing for about two weeks. She said her daughter told her the sexual encounters were not consensual.

The assaults happened in a jail supply room, the inmate's mother told the South Bend Tribune, which did not publish her name. The mother said her daughter was jailed for failing to appear for sentencing on a drunken driving charge.
